2003-03-05 - Intellectual Property Considerations in Building Your Business

WHAT: Please join David Carroll '73 for a discussion of the role of intellectual property in the early stages of your company’s formation and growth. Given the panoply of IP laws, which ones should you pay attention to? When do you need to take action? Young companies encounter many IP challenges and opportunities as they struggle with funding, recruiting, research and development, alliance-building, and manufacturing and distribution. Issues involving IP ownership, IP agreements, patents, copyrights, trademarks, the DMCA, IP licensing, strategic IP, and angry competitors with IP assets of their own, all of these and more will have to be dealt with within the constraints of your company’s resources as your company builds toward success. David is a Partner in the Intellectual Property practice group of Dorsey & Whitney, where he practices all aspects of intellectual property law, including strategic counseling in patents, copyrights, trademarks, and trade secrets, intellectual property due diligence and auditing, patent validity/infringement analysis and opinion rendering, patent preparation and prosecution, management of intangible assets portfolios, patent and technology licensing, software and multimedia (including Internet) licensing, technology partnering agreements, consulting and services agreements, and patent litigation trial strategy and discovery. His areas of technical concentration include computers and semiconductors, software and business methods, remote sensing, and medical devices. He has served as in house counsel with Schlumberger, and has practiced with the IP boutique Skjerven Morrill in San Jose, California, and with the Brobeck firm in Austin, Texas. David received a BS degree in Electrical Engineering from Princeton and a JD from New York University School of Law.
